A SINGULAR KICK IN THE PHILOSOPHER'S ASS
During this second session we will discuss together the theme of singularity under the angle of the intrusion of practice (and primarily political practice) into theory. Through two very different texts of Louis Althusser, we will examine how singular political and historical problems reconfigure the very relationship between theory and political practice. The theme of singularity, besides being a problem of theoretical reflection, a theoretical object, here becomes a real and explosive practical object for theory, excessive over it, and powerfully changing its own internal coordinates.
Reading list:
- Louis Althusser, For Marx, essay: “On the materialist dialectic: On the Unevenness of Origins”, Chapters 4 and 5, called “A 'Pre-given' Complex Structured Whole” (p. 193- 200), and “Structure in Dominance: Contradiction and Overdetermination” (p.200-218). The text is available at this site.
- Louis Althusser, Machiavelli and Us, London, Verso, 1999, pp. 5-36. (Chapter 1 and the beginning of Chapter 2)
- We will also discuss a short passage of Sylvain Lazarus’ Anthropology of the Name, that you can find here.
Master copies of the texts are available at the Library.
