In our first attempt at setting up this sequence of the Versus Laboratory, we will attempt, via the examination of the notions of negation and consistency, to measure the difference that the notion of matter makes on a major contemporary project to reformulate a systematic ontology, Alain Badiou’ Being and Event.
Posed as a “materialist ontology” by some, the fundamental thesis put forth by Badiou is that “ontology=mathematics”. These positions seem to be contradictory. In what way does the mathematical sense of the ontology (its identity) match up to the reputed “materialism”? By looking at the specific means by which Badiou pronounces the identity of ontology and mathematics, we will test the claim of materialism purported in his work. Is there indeed a reinvention of materialism’s function in thought? Does the displacement of ontology to mathematics (out of philosophy) reinstitute a form of idealism or does it produce the necessary crack in philosophy’s autonomy that in turn conditions it in mathematical practice?
Readings:
[NB: The meeting will begin with a streamlined reconstruction of Badiou’s mathematical ontology, one laid out in the first five meditations of Being and Event. The articles (by Ray Brassier and myself) accomplish a schematizing task (with some critical notes of course). The texts by Badiou are the sources for these discussions. ]
