In continuing to look at the conceptual limits of materialism today, we will turn, in September's seminar, to the some problems in political theology. Our guest, William Rauscher will help provide the framework for this discussion with a paper entitled "Sovereign, Apostle, Messiah: Thinking the Theological in Contemporary Materialist Politics".
The field of political-theology introduces different dimensions from
which to view the operation of materialism in contemporary thought.
Keeping in mind works by Taubes, Agamben and others, in what ways can
we introduce questions concerning theology’s limits and intensities as
a means to examine what undergirds contemporary materialist discourse,
as well as what might serve to transform it? Subsequently, what is at
stake when we speak of a progressive materialist theology and its
consequences for political theory?
In this context, my examination is aimed at investigating three
elements that have formed the basis of a political-theological
discourse today:
1. The theological sources for the contemporary theoretical regard
for the bios as an object of political praxis
2. The material status of an event-miracle as a central paradigm and
problematic for political subjectivity
3. The political significance of the messianic distinction between a
this-worldly and other-worldly life
Each element will be addressed with reference to a figure that
embodies its particular intersection of materialism and political
theology. The figure of the sovereign embodies the problem of the bios
as a political object, the apostle represents a political subjectivity
constituted or deconstituted by the event-miracle, and the Messiah
incarnates the effects which a theological division between heaven and
earth can have in the political sphere. Inquiries into these three
figures and their respective problems will aim to cast light on the
various link-ups between materialism, politics and theology, showing
ultimately how a perhaps unexpected re-match between materialism and
theology today can be crucial for political theory.
