One divides into Two
After our inquiry into the transformations of the concept of singularity, we will now focus on the next logical step: what is a duality? How are two elements produced in a singular situation, how an element is produced by a combination of two separate singualarities?
In this first session, we will analyze how a duality is not the division of a given essence, of a solid being, but is the act itself of division of a contradictory knot. In order to seize this perspective we will read together some texts of Pierre Macherey and Alain Badiou. In these texts, starting from a political consideration of how a contradiction - class struggle - polarizes into two positions between which a decision has to be taken, they manage to draw the outlines of a new conception of the dialectic between the singular and the universal.
We will discuss the following texts (click on the names to download them)
Alain Badiou - Theory of contradiction (chapter 1)
Pierre Macherey - One divides into two (from Memories of dinosaur)
In our June meeting, we will reverse this perspective by analyzing how "in order to have one, you need two (or maybe four)".
In our July meeting we will receive the philosopher Jacob Rogozinski, who will present his theory of the "chiasm", via which, using some psychoanalytic and some political elements, he tries to explain how a subject is at the same time a consisitant unity and a irreductible movement of splitting
