VERSUS LABORATORY – THE DUAL PART III
What remains of the two?
An encounter with Jacob Rogozinski
In the two preceding meetings we have examined the philosophical figure of the Two under two angles: 1) the Two from the point of view of the division and splitting of the One (via the Maoist and Leninist perspective of class struggle), 2) and the Two as an encounter (in love, but also in theatre) of two elements which construct the scene of commonality without fusing into One (but rather constructing a scene of new possible divisions).
For the third, closing meeting of this sequence, we invited Jacob Rogozinski, professor of philosophy at Strasbourg University, to provide us with another perspective on the Dual. Rogozinski starts from the idea that if in an encounter there is the creation of a unity, this is possible only with the subsequent production of a reminder, an excess over the synthesis of the two elements. This logic applies also to the constitution of the subject, constitution that Rogozinski finds in the production of a reminder engendered in the encounter of two partial objects – namely the left hand and the right hand touching each other at the same time. In his struggle with psychoanalytical (but also political) thought, Rogozinski's claim is that the creative point of the encounter of a duality does not lie in the holding on to the force of division and subtraction, but in the production of an excess.
In the two downloadable articles you can find some elements of Rogozinski’s thought, useful to prepare the encounter with this original philosopher, who has been struggling to keep philosophy under the constant influence of psychoanalysis, theatre and politics.
Article II
Jacob Rogozinski is the author of several books: Faire part: Cryptes de Derrida ; Le don de la loi: Kant et lénigme de l’éthique ; Kanten: esquisses kantiennes et Le moi et la chair. He also published extensively on Artaud and on Lacan.
